i hadn't paid much attention earlier to michael johnsen's work and it wasn't until last year (or i think so) that did i purchased those 2 3"cdrs from metamkine which turned to an instant love.

michael works with surfaces, acoustics and electronics making a stunning atmosphere. more musique concrete feeling on 1 cdr and more improvised electronics on the other. dating from 2007. sadly not so much music of his around...

a short and great fave. h3o has been a extreme fave in mid 90's that 've discovered their records and started listening to them maniacally. still is, mostly the chris watson era before his departure in fall 80's though 'kill the king' too and the sub rosa peter greenaway cd belong to faves as well.

'Redintegrate' is a compendium of details taken from recordings made since that time, many of which are included more extensively than on [the above releases]. Each bears out Spridgeon's deposition: 'Until man can learn to set himself from himself, what he is from what he does, there can be no real hope of creation'.

i uploaded earlier the catalogue of the experimental musics fest in 97 and totally loved the idea of ripping (though knowing that dimitris will skin me alive) the what i consider today as one of the best experimental records to emerge from greece in the 90's (well 'ermai' is the other and #3 in my list is the 1st side of optical musics still unpublished promo tape of'abbe olympios' - the 2nd side needs editing to be as freaked improv as the 1st) and definitely one of the best of the last 20 years at least regarding our local network.

issued in 96 after an LP on elfish and the pharmacodynamics cd on eflish too which had as bonus the 2nd side of the LP. till then and at least for the great part of the 90s ilios was using mostly samples and was this a la residents (allow me this comparison) kind of sound. i still recall the day i met dimitris downtown for a beer (well i must have drunk a hell of vodka for sure then)and get my copy plus distro copies. remember that a couple of hours later i crushed in l.a. bar in exarhia to hang out with spyros of sound pollution / vomit for a couple of drinks (aka more vodka w/ lemon), out of couriosity lakis who run the bar (today runs bar 'oasis' in bangok, thailand so if you chance there say hi from his ol pals) wanted to listen to it so we gave a first listen there, gave it a couple more back home. can't say i liked it on the contrary i loved a lot the naked woman on the booklet's inlay but not so much the cd then. put it in the library and it was a few years later that did i listen to it again and loved it totally loved it, so much that still consider myself an idiot why i never asked for an LP issue or even better why didn't bootleg it and just pop up one day and hang dimitris his copies or better mail them w/ no sender's address on the pack or so.

a strong, well crafted work that each time you listen to it more and more sounds unfold in your mind lotsa styles to remind you but overall is a unique piece of experimental musics that comes highly recommended.

guess what i also love in the cd version is the 61+ full version compared to the some 49+ of the LP. notably of course for the 'james' instead of jimmy lyons on the back. the kinda ebay buy for some $6 or less.

experimental musics fest in volos 21-23 / 2 / 1997 catalogue

another catalogue this time from a 3 day fest that took place in the city of volos back in late feb 1997. back then costis drygianakis (one of the founding members of the greek experimental band 'optical musics' in mid 80's) was an extremely active figure of the greek experimental musics scene being a member of optical musics, the key figure behind the legendary & sadly defunct 'edo'(here) records but also for a period of some 4 years (more or less) got involved in various activities in cultural organisations of the city notable for some trully memorable performances, theatre pieces he helped to set up. a story which sooner or later someone should sing for his behalf but to the point right now...

fall 96 chondros / katsiani and ilios perform in thessaloniki at the basement of the record store 'lotus' (home also of the also defunct poeta negra label)a live set that for thessaloniki networkers of the time will remain as the live set where someone was having a haircut and pieces of his hair were used to saw a buton on his shirt, someothers were trying to vomit on stage but couldn't manage to do so, etc etc etc. a few months later in feb 97 they are invited to set up a 3 day fest in volos in the form of experimental mixed media kinda music, theatre, performance, etc. so this one was set up.

regarding the condros / katsiani photos. a series of photos of the kiss w/ the measuring tape have been used back then in lotsa mags and catalogues. notably also the gallery x in exarhia, athens 97 or 98 chondros / katsiani exhibition that started w/ the kiss that led to the unfolded measure out of their mouths.
the page photo w/ thanasis having the lights taped on him is taken from the 51 weekends events that was held in alli poli gallery (konst melenikou, thess/niki) in 96 is the one that during the performance due to a short circuit problem luckily he wasn't burned alive. due to a fuse problem he started getting burned, electricity was cut and the performance as far as i recall stopped.

i have scanned and uploaded the catalogue of the event (sorry in greek), is the catalogue in its entity as long as people who might seek also infos on the town can found ads of sponsors including shops that might have closed or might have transformed into something else. sadly cannot track down in the archive the video tape of the event in order to rip and upload but hope one day in the future i'll manage to find it. till then enjoy!

must admit that was never fond of the wolvies recordings in general. i chanced upon two live shows of them in 2006 for the atp thing and liked them A LOT but was never for the recorded material. however 'black vomit' belongs to the recordings that i didn't pay attention back then but kicks my ass now. strong and adventurous music and hope you'll share the enthusiasm for it too!

here's a quite recent fave. discovered it accidentally, purchased it and since then often played so many times that i handed it to a friend to transfer it on a cdr in order to take care of the vinyl so here it is documented and uploaded as well.

recorded between 59-65 this 5 x 10" includes some stunning recordings of birds of siberia, far east and the european part of russia. one of my fave ones regarding bird recordings. included as well is the booklet scanned featuring infos on each of the 10" plus which birds are documented in it.

wich was treted and recomposed in 1987. The idea was to work with early
rock-recordings in a non-nostalgic way analysing the relations between

Section 2 consits of compositions featured on the Captured Music Festival,
february 1987. Since the performance was denominated by confrontation and
combination of acoustic and optic elements, the tracks were rearranged as
"pure acoustic" features.

Section 3: Whilst the tracks of the other 3 section are composed with
studio-techniques these are improvised direct-to-tape.

the funny thing with this record is when i first learned about it. it was a usual keymap ebay auction and suddenly saw it buy it now at a rather high price and got curious to hear what this might be as it sounded like a children record but not the ones i was expecting to be. luckily i downloaded it from a children's record blog (& i reupload here). side a is the usual effects, children's of the 60s b side is the more 60's funky dj stuff. pretty funny.

summer of 89 at a crossroads as the grind thing was coming to its end at least in the way i (& too many others) we lived it even for that short period of time. earache has launched the morbid angel 'altars of madness' LP and w/out doubt a death metal fashion was coming ripping but already for lots of us the world of obscure musics had been opened via groups we were discovering back then like spk, throbbing gristle, nww, amm, etc etc. thanks to the tape trading scene of the grind/metal scene wasn't too difficult to keep on doing the same w/ the more 'indie' (allow me use this word) scene's net. 'zines were the easiest way to learn 'bout various tape labels, proejcts, mail orders of the time great help back then 'vromia' (aka 'the filth), to ktinos, skies tou b-23 but me speaking it was the 'neo rok'zine of giorgos priniotakis that introduced me to harsh and obscure sounds on one hand but on the other helped to launch my first tape label dedicated to experimental musics 'harsh dept'. guess nothing would have happened if it werent' this compilation tape. launched in july 89 but got acquaint with it almost a year afterwards or less. i was introduced to the sounds of some of my all time favest projects like hands to, city of worms and if,bwana. thanks to this compilation i came in contact with gianfranco santoro (today of the sin org / nailed fame) who back then used to do rattlesnake arena fanzine and run a devastating mail order who introduced me to frans de waard and kapotte muziek / korm plastics, blah blah blah

but let's stop it here as i can talk for hours and hours about this compilation.

that was my first encounter with the frank rowenta / achim p. li khan work and still my favest. bought upon release and dare to say i love it more than their debut 'tiefpunkte moderner tonkompositionen' on dradomel which is also fantastic but this one since the first time i listened to it to this day reminds me of lotsa bizarre a la nurse with wound of the glorious days outfits if you get what i mean.

i always thank phil todd (of ashtray navigations fame) for discovering this amazing psych / acid punk comp LP. it was a few years ago when in a discussion for LPs in the jewelled antler list did phil drop a line about some fave LPs of his, 'the return of acid dreams' was one of them. without hesitation i asked him to tape it for me and upon receivign the tape i was totally blown into it (having as b-side caetano veloso's 'araca azul' masterpiece too which made the insanity even greater!)

since then i've heard lots of rumours about this compilation, one of which says that a guy who run a record store in berlin issued it in the 80's and so on. since this one a sequel appeared there's also the acid dreams testament (clocks some 75 min as cd), a triple foldout LP too however this one stands as the blow out for me. 've had the 3ple LP (testament cd) but i always feeled they miss the whole intensity of this one, every piece is a little diamond itself making overall a brilliant atmosphere, check it for yourself & enjoy!

've heard his name a lot of times but never did i pay any attention to his music until recently when in a trade a friend throwed in the pack a copy of 'cool truth' stellar outsider music bluesey, jazzy, multitracking insanity from 85. was nuts to listen a great production and pure vinyl rip without any deglitch between the gaps of the vinyl grooves from one song to another! makes it even more lo-fi!!!

peter lacroix & guenter haertel 'personalis aquisgrandi' cd (no-note records)

i owe it to christophe heeman for discovering this cd. actually he was involved in its production. the brainwashed site mentions that he remixed the whole thing. not sure of what happened but it was one of the first location recordings i acquained back then in my collection and was astounded by it and the way they had worked w/ maps, locations, etc... still love it!

shit scans so here's the english translation of the text to get an idea on the project.

Two portraits, as distinct and intimate as one might expect from this form
of artistic expression - and yet, no figurative illustrations. A stoll
through the city, a sensory description of certan situations captured at the
source - absolutely authentic, full of atmosphere, and yet beyond normal
expectations; it is neither photography nor landscape painting.

Peter Lacroix & Guenter Haertel are breaking new ground in what is not just
a joint effort but a reciprocal exploration of their respective fields;
reduced, virtually ascetic in the application of artistic means and yet
poetic in the message.

Peter Lacroix's 'personalis artistic portraits' are based on numbers and
letters of the alphabet. Considering today's preoccupation with developments
in informatin technology, one could level the accusation that this is not
exactly the most original idea. However, the numbers Lacroix categorizes to
the indicidual throw little light on the physical presence of that person,
or indeed on his / her status in our society. They project the portrayed
person into an almost forgotten, mystical relam. They refer artistically and
abstractly to a cogent existence beyond the Socio-Normative.

Using the Kaballa, an ancient Jewish doctrine based on the interpretation of
certain letters of the alphabet and numeric systems, Lacroix transposes the
information he has gathered on a certain individual into geometric figures.
The characters are mysterious yet by no means fictional, drawing their form
froma combination o fthe 'date of birth' or 'name number' or 'lucky number'.
Each person is expressed individually - artistically yet abstractly, with a
final manifestatin remaining impossible, despite every effort to embody the
portaryed person in concrete terms.

In his artistic interaction with Guenter Haertel, Lacroix transposes these
geometric images into the direct intellectual mileiau of both artists. The
starting point was their own Personalis portrait coordinates which were then
placed over a map of Aachen, with the geometric angles determining certain
locations in the city.

Haertel, armed with microphone, visited these locations and recorded the
sounds he found there. Thus, a whole series of acoustic impressions
materialized, not just a description of the individual points, but a rounded
impression of the city reflecting its tenor - a feast for the ears.

Haertel's sound document is also a very individual portrait of Aachen.
Listening to it, the natural process of association soon reveals that this
urban background noise cannto be interhchanged with any other. Although
Haertel, the audio journalist and chronicler, deliberately avoided the
historically and locally renowned highlights of the city, Aachen's special
characterisitics still emerge from what would seems to be an arbitrary
conglomerate of everyday sounds. The backdrop noises of the working world,
traffic, birds are counterpointed by a variable, yet constantly recurring
sound experience of ells, church choirs and the boundless bubbling of
Aachen's water.

i was unaware of the master mitropoulos's LP of scriabin's 'poem of ecstasy / poem of fire' to be honest or at least i hadn't paid the necessary attention to it earlier. i only had the stokowski version on everest of poem of ecstasy and svetlanov's version of the 1966 melodya lp w/ an impressive version of rachmaninoff's 'isle of the dead'. but mitropoulos's LP unfolds a completely diffent universe compared to the other 2 LPs that makes it a devastating LP! no words to describe it, just listen & experience it!

for trully loooooong i wasn't keen on cecil taylor's work. perhaps because i was (and still am) allergic to piano but some exceptions or rock tracks.
i only had the monstrous 'winged serpent' and 'conquistador' since early 90's in my collection till last year that did i chance upon the thread on the skafunkrastapunk forum and downloaded a couple of albums like the unit's 'akisalakila', 'nefertiti', etc and was totally blown by them! long story to cut it short here and explain why, etc.. the thing is his music, etc..

being nuts w/ his work started -as you can guess- downloading and then buying the ones i love the most.. such as this gem the 3ple lp box on shandar. no comments on it, i totally love it including once more a stellar line up such as

betley welcomes careful drivers (a.k.a. the brainchild of phil todd alias 'ashtray navigations' and many other disguises such as dogliveroil, tea culture, etc) is one of my favest lo-fi noise labels. not only because of one of my favest projects ever, ashtray navigations but for many releases it brought to daylight.

anna planeta being one of them. recorded in an abandoned building by phil todd, andy jarvis, dan bird, harrased by the neighbours who called the police at some point thinking that a 'satanic mass' was taking place in the building is an intense lo-fi recording sometime thanks to its nature bringing in mind the work of projects like metgumbnerbone whose lp on a-mission was also recorded in the ruins of an abandoned industry at least to mention one.

was pretty funny too when a couple of years ago since the 2cd set's release i accidentallly chanced upon the project's name, being one of the female characters of dusan makavejev's cult 'sweet movie' film (you can download it here & you can check & donwnload (not sure but seems is 192kbps) infos on manos hadjidakis's incredible soundtrack here)

phil also has some very few remaining copies of the anna planeta 2cd set. you can ask him for price, availability, etc not only for the memorable anna planeta but also for various other remaining betleys but also for ashtray navigations and related ones!

i can't recall the blog where i tracked down first the 'music for instruments...' piece a couple of years ago but it was of those bartok pieces that i fell in love with upon first listening... i was also curious on the 'miraculous mandarin' piece too and it was a few months ago when during an accidental but usual ebay buy that i cahnced upon this lp.. classic things.. 1 euro auction ending.. 7 euros postage...

i like a lot this lp, to be honest in general i love a lot the 50's / 60's interpretations of contemporary / classical pieces (well some classical mostly contemporary) as were more liberal times they are or at least sound to me more open minded, etc... perhaps is my dillusion.

for the record though you can check the back cover... is georg stolti conducting the london symphony orchestra. 1964 on decca.

john cage 'live' (wergo LP)

i always had this love/hate relation to cage's works. i like a lot the ideas, etc but regarding his entire recorded opus must say that there are few recordings i fancy. besides 'variations', 'cartridge music' (especially the version w/ tudor of the split lp w/ wolf on time), roaratorio, hpchd (the lp version not the later emf) and guess a couple more like the cramps lps... 'live' (sometimes quoted also as 'empty words' too) on wergo is one of those exceptions too. a mesmerising piece!

i must admit that i was never keen on both cowell's and harrison's musics. until a few years ago when during a trip to meet the duo of 'kalorifeur' i chanced upon this LP in their collection which they loved a lot. definitely is amazing especially in late night listening! for long was nuts with the cowell 'persian set' piece but upon transfering the vinyl to digital liked also harrison's piece as well.

hybrid for me in early / mid 90's issued some trully stelar improv recordings, the wiesbadener improvisations ensemble being one of them and certainly a highlight of european improv.

ulrich phillipp was a part of another great improv outfit, maxwells daemon who had a cd out on hybrid and a cd too on the italian fringes label too.

it was a pleasant surprise to hear back then that the merce cunningham dance co were coming to perform in 2002 for 2 dates at the kalamata dance festival as long as christian marclay and takehisa kosugi were the sound engineers of the project. a friend was there and recorded both dates. the 3rd of august was transformed to a cdr so here it it. sorry cuts, missed must be the last 10 minutes more or less.

anyway enjoy this pristine set... here

can't recall how the discussion bout this compilation emerge.. for sure i recall that alessandro of rossbin had asked me for a contact with sonic caterin band... i asked whether he wanted an archery target track in it or something like that and then were unearthed a couple of names he wanted to get in touch with and happen to know them so helped i think besides the scb also w/ stelzer / talbot... anyway that's not the point... as i check it now sounds still a great moment. compiled by alex for the marriage of sandro & anna, a friendly couple of his. can't recall the copies of the edition right now. however i think this one includes the sole (& for me the best) recordings of archery target (for this case - anastasis grivas, thodoris zioutos, nicolas malevitsis) recorded sometime in a july afternoon of 2002 at small music theatre. compilation / marriage were on september 2002.

& they lived happily ever after....

so here's the 1st fish eye view tape. it was an early 90's evening at the old 'rock city' in sokratous st that did peris hand me the tape, accidentally if am not mistaken. we chanced there and he handed it. i went nuts with it.
so when a few months ago asked me whether or not fancy the idea of doing 'the 2 fish hospitality' couldn't say no...

i was diggin' the genital grinder tape archive the other day when i came across those 2 tapes... the 'tight leather' tape label (?!?!?!?!) tapes from 81 #21 & #22 of throbbing gristle and throbbing gristle & boyd rice live sets from berlin and frankfurt on the 7th and 8th & 9th of november 1981.
i have never came across the tapes nor i recall them in any discography to say the truth. all i know about them is that i was given them as a gift from my friend robert zank sometime in early 90's (think 93 must have been) on a trip to athens for promoting edition rz material and he handed them as a gift. he told me he was present back then at the legendary live sets but can't recall if he was involved in the production of those 2 tapes or not.
to cut the long story short... am not sure and is just a hypothesis but i wouldn't be surprised if i ever heard that out of those tapes records like the 'editions.. frankfurt...berlin...' or 'funeral in berlin' to name but a few were made...
hey don't freak when on side a 'discipline' is cut... it's again all over from the very begining the entire track (as also appears on the 'discpline' fetisch 12") on side b... enjoy the stellar boyd rice set too!

anyway... this just an hypothesis regarding the records around these recordings and those tapes... the sounds matters...

pete and royce 'suffering of tomorrow' LP

one of my beloved greek 'prog' lps together with aphrodite's child '666'. though i was never much in the greek 'rock' scene of the 70's. besides a couple of specific records (e.g. dionysis savvopoulos's 'bromiko psomi' & ballos', kostas tournas's 2nd lp)and specific tracks (e.g socrates's 'starvation'). and regarding the couple lps that were supposed to be 'prog' back then like plg's i found them rather tame. this is an exception. since early 90's that i listened to it thanks to spacefreak when one day we were working on some stuff for 'genital grinder' and he taped it for me. this one was issued in early 80's as a private release (not sure if 81 or 82). they did a 2nd lp too 'days of destruction' out of which only 2 tracks were in the style of their debut ('days of destruction' and another one). the rest of the lp was in a completely different mood. not sure how many copies were pressed of 'suffering of tomorrow' i have heard a rumour of some 200 but can't say for sure.
also don't freak upon seeing 8 titles on the sleeve and 7 tracks can't recall which tracks form a kind of 'trilogy' or something like that. think are the ones of side a... mp3 @ 320 as usual.

here's a gemm i didn't know of... came across accidentally last summer when i came across it at a friend's place, listened to it and totally liked it!
parts of it reminded me the optical musics 'volume 2' cd (therefore is uploaded with it) though this one is more electroacoustic, abstract at some parts too and me speaking sounds as one of the best greek experimental / electroacoustics recordings of the early 90's. at least as far as i'm concerned & regarding the ones that were issued back then or have come across here and there back / since then (& i believe i have listened to this day almost the greateest part of such musics being recorded back at that period).
regarding the group i don't know much, rumours i have heard but as i am not font of a myth construction (especially nowadays that every recording unearthed from the vaults turns to be a 'lost diamond of the history of music') let's leave it as is... a mindblowing & challenging piece of adventurous music...

optiki mousiki's (optical musics) 'tomos 2'(volume 2) was their 2nd effort since their memorable debut lp in late 80s. whereas the lp was a more experimental effort the cd is - at least according to my ears - a more 'ambient' constructed result... back then costis drygiannakis (the mastermind behind the project) was descending more and more to the world of old non-european music traditions, and his interest is obvious not only in the selection of traditional soloists, but also in the the various odds & sods sampled from ethnological recordings. listening to it today might not get the feeling i got back then upon listening it for the first time, perhaps as it might sounds more 'light' to my ears at some points but still brings in mind lovely memories of those early days, cool sounds, even records that were discovered, discussed (still discovering thanks to costis) since then...

hi, while working the idea of absurd's & related blog 'all noises swell together in landscapes' thought that might be a cool idea to start another one to 'issue' new material online... don't know why but rejected the idea after a while. absurd's already into lots so why adding one more thing on my back? however sounded thought to keep it running uploading either recordings i like and are either hard to find or deleted releases (e.g. tapes, etc) and it won't be a lie to say that the idea of found sounds or field recordings of my everyday routine might be uploaded in the future... i'll see... i prefer having it like a free form diary / canvas and see what happens... like the sounds of violent onsen geisha's 'excrete music' cd from which the name was coined... enjoy!
